PhD Course in Authentic Leadership

The main objective to be reached with this PhD course in ‘Authentic Leadership’ is to tackle skills, gaps and mismatches by supporting new innovative pedagogies to design and develop learning-outcomes curricula that meet the learning needs of doctoral researchers whilst also being relevant to the labour market. In this regard, the component of innovation will lie in linking the academic environment with the business environment and their skill demands.

The training of doctoral researchers includes components of innovation and creativity. By fostering entrepreneurial, open and innovative skills, doctoral researchers will be able to apply them to a business environment. Specifically, the PhD course will train doctoral researchers following the employability skills put forward by the EU in terms of:

  • Complex problem solving, by bringing in real life case problems, that the doctoral researchers would aim to address
  • Mental elasticity, by allowing doctoral researchers to "feed" of each other in terms of the interdisciplinary knowledge they bring to the discussion
  • Critical thinking on the subjects at hand, which will spill over into:
  • Judgement & decision making, which are crucial aspects when it comes to future employability possibilities.

Upon completing the course, doctoral researchers would be able to:

  • Develop an advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the concept Authentic Leadership (AL)
  • Demonstrate conceptual and theoretical understanding of AL
  • Critically reflect upon self-awareness in AL
  • Reflect upon and evaluate practicing AL in different contexts
  • Illustrate how development of authentic leadership would benefit the PhD learning process

The course contains lectures, simulations, PBL-oriented workshops, problem-solving and reflection exercises. Blended learning and online tools will be utilized.

Pre-course work: material for the course will be available 1 month before the on-site session on the course Intranet. There will be online communication as well as written assignments before and after the on-site session.

Quality assurance in relation to the development and implementation of the PhD course in 'Authentic Leadership' will be oversighted by the External Quality Auditor and the Steering Committee.
