This is a generic PhD course. It aims to acquaint doctoral researchers with the process of theorizing and theory building in management research. We start from the premise that it is critical for doctoral researchers to master the process of theorizing and theory development from the extant knowledge and empirical data quite early in their Doctoral studies. By the end of the course the delegates will have gained skills and knowledge in (a) gaining sensitivity to theoretical development during the literature review process, and (b) analyzing and theorizing from primary data.

The PhD course is delivered using a mixture of lecture-based and interactive teaching methods, including 2 group assignments:

  • Assignment 1 aims at continuing building knowledge, skills and competences in identifying own voice through learnt (in T1 and via own reading) and new (in T2 and via own reading) tools and methods of theorizing and theory building
  • Assignment 2 aims at discovering substantive and emergent theoretical codes by creating memos exclusively based on the empirical data provided.

A feedback to doctoral researchers on their identified issues and challenges as well as a public lecture is offered to non-participants and delivered by guest lecturers. The course faculty include:

The course coordinator is Prof Romeo V. Turcan, TBRP, AAU Business School. Detailed information, inter alia, about the course programme, assignment guidelines, and reading material is available on the course Intranet.
